Resident quartet at the Aspen Music Festival and the Manhattan School of Music, the American Quartet is internationally recognized for performances of elegance and strength. In three decades of touring, the American has performed in all fifty states and appeared in virtually every important concert hall throughout the world. Resident quartet at the Aspen Music Festival since 1974 and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York since 1984, the American has also served as resident quartet at the Taos School of Music (1979 to 1998), the Peabody Conservatory, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The Quartet's diverse activities have also included numerous international radio and television broadcasts, tours of Asia, and performances with the New York City Ballet, the Montreal Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In the summer of 2008 the Quartet returned to Beijing for its fourth residency at the Great Wall International Music Academy.
James Dunham, former violist of the Cleveland Quartet, is an internationally known soloist and chamber musician. Currently Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, he directs their Advanced Quartet Studies Program. Mr. Dunham formerly taught at the New England Conservatory where he also Chaired the String Department. A devoted teacher, he frequently presents viola and chamber music master classes at leading schools and universities
Norman Fischer first graced the international concert stage as cellist with the Concord String Quartet. Mr. Fischer concertized extensively in the US and abroad, recorded over 40 works, premiered 70 scores, appeared frequently on radio and television and received numerous accolades including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, several Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award.
